New Design #118

Nicely written piece about us in issue 118 of New Design magazine. “If we have a philosophy it is that design is about removing not adding,” says David Tonge, founder of The Division. That ‘if’ betrays a slight reluctance to offer a sound bite distillation of the consultancy’s approach. Indeed, Tonge admitsthat he is wary of design companies that are overly prescriptive in the application of a particular process. He prefers The Division to be flexible and work to the needs of the individual client. Available from New Design Magazine.

We are excited about the arrival of our Journal Issue 01. Printed on newsprint and designed for our clients, the goal is to communicate some of the things we are thinking, the inspiration etc rather than just projects that you can see on our website or when you meet us. Its taken a long time to devise but it looks great and if you are a client of ours we hope you will enjoy it. We plan there will be a couple a year.

Brits in Milano

During our visit to Salone del mobile last month we came across the work of young British designer Elin Green.  Her work, a collection of vessels, was on show in the newest district Lambrate, an old industrial area of Milan displaying an exciting mix of emerging artists and designer’s.  Her Knot On Wood collection reinterprets traditional techniques creating a series of hand-turned bowls that combine skilled craftsmanship and contemporary design.  And we love them. You can see more of her work here

Deliciously Accurate

After Point Conference

It was a unusual sunny day in West London but I was indoors talking at the first Point Conference. It was a packed room at the RIBA (a lovely building) and an interesting mixture of photographers, designers, thinkers etc. Since many of the audience had not been introduced to our work, I showed three projects which hightlighted our design thinking - "design is about removing not adding." The reaction to the event has been very good and well documented in the Design Press. For those who said nice things about us and our work via Twitter etc, thanks very much. It was a new experience for me to be live quoted so that on finishing I could see audience feedback. A kind of prototyping in action ! To read more take a look here

Bill Moggridge 1943-2012

In a world of designer celebrities with little depth or humility, Bill Moggridge was a genuine contributor to the design industry and a really nice guy. I had the pleasure to work with him at IDEO in California in the mid-90s and still draw upon the experience today. There is a lovely website to celebrate his life where we posted this story. Please take a look at the site and if you don't know about Bill and his acheivements now is a time to find out - DT

Two small stories.

I worked with Bill at IDEO from the mid-90′s for around 5 years. He and I shared a love of Japan and like others I visited with him several times. On one such trip we went for dinner with one of IDEO’s rather formal clients. My partner Nicole was with us and we were delayed arriving at the restaurant. After sitting, and being rather flustered due to the heat, we were given hot towels in plastic bags to clean our hands and after several attempts to open the bag Nicole catapulted her hot towel across the table and into Bill’s lap. Silence from the client, horror and a moral dilemma for Nicole “should I grab a wet towel from Bill’s crotch before the Kanpai or during the Miso soup?” A large damp patch on cream chinos was followed by a big smile and howls of laughter from Bill….

Years after I left IDEO I met Bill in Tokyo. We had dinner and he told me that he admired my commitment to working with Japanese companies and to learning Japanese etc. I was touched and spurred by the sentiment, and by the thought that a man who had achieved so much still had the desire to do more and to recognise the achievements of others. It was, I found, a characteristic of Bill to put everyone at ease, to listen and find interest in people and their viewpoints, regardless of age and experience etc. There are few if any other Design Icons (as he is for many) who we could say this about. Thanks Bill.
